Pressure is the setting decorators underestimate most often. “Medium pressure” means the upper platen should make solid, even contact across the whole transfer. If the press closes with almost no resistance, it is probably too light. If it requires excessive force or leaves deep platen marks in the garment, back it off. Clamshell presses can apply pressure differently than swing-away or draw presses, so a setting that works on one machine may need adjustment on another.

Pre-press the garment for two to five seconds when needed. This removes moisture and smooths wrinkles in the print area. It is especially helpful with fleece, cotton shirts stored in humid spaces, and garments with pronounced seams. Do not overdo it on heat-sensitive polyester, where unnecessary heat can create a visible press box or color shift.

Place the garment flat and keep the transfer away from thick seams, zippers, buttons, pockets, and collars. Uneven surfaces reduce pressure, which is a common cause of lifting edges after washing. Time, Temperature, and Pressure Work Together

When adhesion is weak, raising temperature is not always the right fix. More heat can damage polyester, create dye migration, or leave a glossy square on sensitive fabric. Instead, diagnose the full press cycle.

A transfer that peels up immediately after application may need more pressure, a few additional seconds, or a better pre-press to remove moisture. If only one corner or one side lifts, suspect uneven platen heat or pressure before changing the entire recipe. If the design adheres but feels overly embedded, shiny, or distorted, reduce heat or dwell time and confirm that pressure is not excessive.

For standard cotton garments, 300°F for 12 to 15 seconds at medium-firm pressure is a practical starting point. For polyester and blends, move toward the low end of the temperature range and test carefully. Lower-temperature DTF films are often the better production choice for performance apparel because they reduce the risk of scorching and dye migration.

Dye migration deserves special attention on red, maroon, navy, black, and other heavily dyed polyester garments. The dye can move upward into light-colored inks after pressing, sometimes immediately and sometimes after several hours. Lower heat helps, but it does not solve every migration issue. Use transfer products designed to block dye migration and test the exact blank before accepting a large team, school, or corporate apparel order.

Peel Method Is Part of the Press Cycle

Never assume every DTF transfer is hot peel. Cold-peel films need time for the adhesive to set as the carrier cools. Peeling too soon can pull ink or adhesive away from the fabric, leaving incomplete edges and weak detail.

For a cold peel, remove the garment from the press or let it rest on the lower platen until the carrier is fully cool to the touch. Peel slowly at a low angle rather than pulling straight up. Watch fine lines, small text, and isolated elements as you peel. If any area starts lifting, lay the film back down, press again for a few seconds, and reassess the pressure and heat before continuing the run.

Hot- or warm-peel transfers move faster in production, but they still require the supplier’s specified technique. If the carrier releases cleanly only when it is very hot, your operators need a consistent workflow so the peel timing does not vary from shirt to shirt.

Use a Finish Press for Better Wear and Feel

After removing the carrier film, cover the design with parchment paper, a protective sheet, or a suitable finishing sheet and press again for three to five seconds. This finish press improves the bond, reduces the plastic-like feel that can occur with some graphics, and gives the design a more uniform surface.

The finish press is not a reason to overheat the garment during the first press. Keep the secondary press short. On polyester or delicate blanks, use the lowest effective temperature and avoid excessive pressure. Your goal is to seat the transfer, not flatten the fabric texture or create a noticeable press mark.

For premium retail pieces, keep a sample of the finished garment beside the press. Operators can compare sheen, color, edge adhesion, and hand feel before a minor issue becomes a full production problem.

If the DTF design will not adhere, first confirm the actual platen temperature and increase pressure before increasing heat. A few extra seconds may help, but only after you rule out cold spots and poor contact.

If the carrier film is difficult to remove, check the peel instruction. Cold-peel film that has not cooled long enough will fight the operator. If it is truly ready to peel but still resists, test a slightly longer dwell time or firmer pressure.

If the print looks scorched, the fabric has a shiny box, or polyester color changes around the graphic, lower the temperature and shorten the press time. A lower-temperature transfer may be required for that garment. For faint color shifts, let the blank cool fully before judging the result, but do not ship a garment until you have confirmed it meets your quality standard.
